- Character Won't Move or Moves on its Own
- The most common cause of this problem is when the control stick on the controller is not in the neutral position when the N64 system is turned on. The neutral position is when the control stick is centered, as it is when you hold the controller while not touching the control stick. Recalibrate the Controller by using one of the following methods:
- Turn the power off on the system. Make sure the control stick on the controller is in the neutral (center) position, and slide the power switch to the ON position. Be sure not to touch the control stick for the first few seconds.
- During game play you can press the L+R+START simultaneously while the control stick on the controller is in a neutral (center) position.
- Consult the Game Pak manual for information on the primary directional control for the game. Some game paks use the control pad rather than the control stick for character movement.
- Try cleaning the controller (See Below).
- If possible, try another controller in the left-hand port. If you have a second Controller, repeat Steps 1 through 3. If the trouble disappears, the first controller may need to be replaced. For information on locating replacements for older products, please click here.
- N64 Sticky Buttons or Control Stick, or other controller problemsTry the following cleaning procedures:
- Unplug the controller from the control deck.
- Get a clean toothbrush (no toothpaste) and a cup of warm tap water (not too hot). Do NOT pour or submerge the controller in any type of liquid.
- Slightly dip the toothbrush in the water (the toothbrush should not be dripping wet) and scrub the area of the controller around the buttons and control stick.
- Work the bristles down around the sides of the buttons and the control stick.
- After cleaning the controller, dry it off with a paper towel.
- Let the controller air dry for at least a couple of hours.
- Test the controller for proper response.
If possible, try another controller in the left-hand port. If you have a second controller, repeat Steps 1 through 7. If the trouble disappears, the first controller may need to be replaced. For information on locating replacements for older products, please click here.

Transfer Pak- Verify that only licensed accessories are being used with the system. Unlicensed products are not fully compatible with Nintendo systems, and may not work correctly.
- Check the game pak manual or packaging to verify that the game is designed to be used with the N64 Transfer Pak.
- Make sure the Game Boy game pak works properly in a Game Boy system. It may be a problem with the Game Boy game pak and not the Transfer Pak.
- Verify that the game paks are inserted in both the control deck and the N64 Transfer Pak. If they are not, insert them and then turn the control deck power off and back on again.
- Verify that the controller is plugged into the proper controller socket on the front of the control deck. If it is not, secure it and then press reset on your control deck.
- Remove and re-insert the N64 Transfer Pak, making sure the pak is fully inserted into the bottom of the controller. If it is not, secure it and then press reset on the control deck.
- If possible, try another controller. If the Transfer Pak works in another controller, it may be the controller that is having a problem. Check out controller troubleshooting (click here).
If the issue persists, the Transfer Pak may need to be replaced. For information on locating replacements for older products, please click here.

- Deleting Saved Information From Controller PaksDepending on the game you own, there are a couple of different ways to delete the saved information on a Controller Pak.
- While turning on the Control Deck, hold down the START button on Controller #1. If the programmers utilized this feature, a Controller Pak menu should appear. This menu will allow you to view and delete the contents of the Controller Pak.
- If the first option doesn't work, then the game pak will have a feature that can only be accessed from a game menu. For example, in Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey, you delete saved info from the Options screen.
To find out the specifics of how the Controller Pak works with a particular game, check the game's instruction manual.
